Need-a-Cake

The Need-a-Cake web site is the home of a company that mainly sells custom-made cakes online (such as birthday cakes, christening cakes, corporate cakes, etc). They also have an online shop selling Sugar Craft cake-making equipment, and sell tickets for cake-making courses and tutorials held in Berkshire.

As is often the case with web sites that have existed for some years and have been updated in a piecemeal fashion, the original Need-a-Cake web site (which was not designed by Flare) was cluttered, confusing and fragmented. We created a lively, colourful and much more user-friendly web site that is easy to navigate through and explains everything clearly and concisely.

The site features our new Pulse CMS, a customised content management system (with password-protected access) that enables changes and additions to be made to the web site at any time. With the old site a request had to be made to the web designer each time changes were required, and it took a long time for adjustments to be made. Now the business owner can simply sign in and instantly add, edit and delete pages, products and images.

Another refinement we introduced was to customise part of the online shop so that cake buyers can select their preferred cake type, dietary requirements, size, delivery options and personalised message. The system automatically adjusts the price in line with the customer’s exact requirements. This level of sophistication would not be possible with an ‘off-the-shelf’ shopping system.
